In October of 2022, the US Environmental Protection Agency has finalized the Specifications of Energy Star Version 7.0 for Residential Windows, Doors, and Skylights. These changes will be implemented on October 23, 2023 to which Door and Window manufacturers must comply.
Why does it matter for us consumers?
Energy Star Version 7.0 addressed energy performance for windows, doors and skylights that can significantly lower our energy usage and cost.
The new criteria for Energy Star 7.0 focused on improving energy efficiency of windows and doors based on the region’s climate zone. Qualified/compliant windows, doors and skylights for Northern Zone must reduce the heat flow (U-Factor) out of the house.
The Southern Zone on the other hand concentrates on lowering Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. SHGC is a measure of how much solar radiation enters a home through a window, door, or skylight and gets turned into heat inside our homes.
